Cutting-edge wineries, enticing restaurants
and wide-open spaces
By Daniel Sogg
The drive along the Central Coast of California is among North America’s
most spectacular….There's nothing quite like being
there at the inception. That's the thrill
and opportunity of visiting California's Central Coast, where vintners are just
beginning to tap their vineyards' potential.
It's a spectacular region, encompassing some of the state's—indeed, some of the
country's—most impressive terrain, where past and present stand shoulder to shoulder.
The past endures in the rusticity that still characterizes much of the area: the
dense forests of old oaks, cattle lolling on hills, vast stretches of row crops
blurring into the distance. The present, well, that's the vineyards, and the producers
defining their appellations.

A balloon glides over the sprawling estate and surrounding vineyards of Opus One—nothing
compares with the views of Napa from a hot air balloon.
Come
for the wine. Stay for the food. Live the wine country life. That's the allure of
Napa Valley in a nutshell. No matter what you might think about America's most famous
winegrowing region—critics claim that it's too crowded, too expensive or too ostentatious—this
is still a fantasyland for wine lovers.
The Wineries
While
there are many spectacular wine regions to visit, there is no place in the wine
world quite like Napa Valley—you won't find more history, wineries and restaurants
wedged into a single 30-mile stretch anywhere else.
Wine,
of course, provides the focal point. It's everywhere you turn. And many wineries
are willing to teach you everything you want to know about wine through educational
tours and extensive tastings that cover everything from collecting to cooking. More…….
